When selling a car you will need to know how to transfer the title on the car you sell, along with documents and fees that will be required. Without being prepared with this transfer information you could delay transfer of your title. Here are 5 steps you can use to make a title transfer.
Things you’ll need:
- Title Transfer application
- Insurance proof
- Driver’s license
- Bill of sale
Step 1 – Confirm Insurance
While retaining ownership of your car to be sold, be sure to maintain insurance on it. Even if you don’t plan on driving the car, you’re required by law to maintain liability insurance.
Step 2 – Locate Your Title
Locate the title of the car to be sold. If your copy is lost, obtain a duplicate from the proper government agency. You can often obtain a copy from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
Step 3 – Collect Necessary Documents
You will likely need copies of some, or all, of the following documents or information:
- Drivers License
- Poof of Insurance
- Bill of Sale
- Vehicle Title
- VIN Number
- Odometer Reading
Step 4 – Prepare to Pay Transfer Fee
Check with you local government agency as to the transfer fee you’ll be asked to pay.
